What is Mouton? The Biology of Luxury
The term Mouton is derived from the French word for sheep. Unlike standard wool, Mouton is lambskin that has been processed to mimic the look and feel of beaver or mink fur. The hair is straightened, chemically treated, and thermally set to create a water-repellent, velvety surface that is incredibly soft to the touch.
The Synthetic Alternative: Polyester "Fur"
Synthetic accents are typically made from acrylic or polyester fibers. While they can look convincing from a distance, they lack the complex cellular structure of natural protein fibers. Under a microscope, synthetic fibers are essentially smooth plastic tubes—they don't breathe, they don't wick moisture, and they are prone to "matting" over time.

Caring for Your Mouton Collar: The Gold Standard
Because Mouton is a biological material, it requires a "less is more" approach to maintenance.
1. The Gravity Clean
Never use a standard brush on Mouton. If the fur looks flat or dusty, simply hold the jacket upside down and give it a vigorous shake. For deeper dust, use a soft-bristled hat brush to gently lift the fibers in the direction of the grain.
2. Moisture Management
If you are caught in a storm, do not panic. Mouton is surprisingly resilient.

The Rule: Never apply direct heat.

The Action: Blot the collar with a dry, lint-free cloth and hang the jacket on a wide-shouldered hanger in a room with good airflow. Avoid hair dryers or radiators, as they will "shrink" the hide underneath the fur, causing the collar to warp.
3. Off-Season Storage
Synthetic fur can be tossed in a bin; Mouton cannot. During the summer, ensure your jacket is stored in a breathable garment bag (cotton, not plastic). Plastic traps humidity, which can lead to mold growth in natural shearling.
How to Spot the Difference
If you are unsure what your jacket is made of, check the "base" of the fibers.
